AI industry begs someone to please stop the AI industry before all human life is extinguished by the AI industry-

The people making artificial intelligence say that artificial intelligence is an existential threat to all life on the planet and we could be in real trouble if somebody doesn’t do something about it.

“AI experts, journalists, policymakers, and the public are increasingly discussing a broad spectrum of important and urgent risks from AI,” the prelude to the Center for AI Safety’s Statement on AI Risk states. “Even so, it can be difficult to voice concerns about some of advanced AI’s most severe risks.

“The succinct statement below aims to overcome this obstacle and open up discussion. It is also meant to create common knowledge of the growing number of experts and public figures who also take some of advanced AI’s most severe risks seriously.”

And then, finally, the statement itself:

“Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.”

It’s a real bang…

‘Hang in there’- A fix for all those Helldivers 2 freeze-ups should ideally land ‘well before the Warbond’, says community manager-

If you’ve been playing Helldivers 2, chances are you’ve probably been booted to your desktop after extracting—I sure have. Typically, this bug causes a premature return to civilian life at the end of a mission, which is extra frustrating since they tend to take over half an hour to complete. At least, if you’re as much of a sample-hungry completionist as I am.

Fortunately, a fix is on the way, as confirmed by community manager Twinbeard on the Helldivers 2 Discord: “I just briefly want to say that we’re aware of the crashes primarily surrounding extraction/end of mission that currently a lot of you are facing. There’s a hotfix arriving very soon.”

As for a timeframe, Twinbeard noted that they were “pretty sure” it’ll arrive before the new Warbond, which is scheduled to deploy April 11. Granted, that’s a solid ‘maybe’ passed on by a community manager—and considering the unruly nature of game development, there are no guarantees in bug-fix land.

Cities- Skylines 2’s first performance patch is live on Steam-

The first Cities: Skylines 2 patch is now out on Steam, and while developer Colossal Order says it’s not going to fix all the issues in the new city building sim, it’s a start.

Cities: Skylines 2 makes a number of significant improvements to the original game, but it’s also struggled with performance issues including low and unstable framerates, hitching, and outright crashes. Colossal Order had warned players to “manage expectations on performance” prior to release, but that didn’t really soften the blow: There is much unhappiness on Steam and Reddit, where numerous players have complained that the game is essentially an early access release.

That’s not too far from the truth. Colossal Order said more recently that it was aware of the performance problems but decided to release the game on schedule anyway because “we had seen enough feedback from players enjoying the game that it would be more unfair to postpone” the launch.

“We know we will keep working on the ga…

Destiny 2 game director Joe Blackburn is leaving Bungie for ‘a new adventure’-

Destiny 2 game director Joe Blackburn, who’s led development of the sci-fi shooter since 2020, is leaving Bungie.

In a series of X posts, Blackburn announced on January 30 that he’ll embark on “a new adventure outside the walls of Bungie” next month at the start of a major testing phase for upcoming Destiny 2 expansion The Final Shape.

The “end-to-end playtest” has been a Destiny 2 development ritual since 2018’s Forsaken expansion, says Blackburn, and involves “multiple days of consecutive internal playtesting.” The Final Shape, which is scheduled to release on June 4, will get its end-to-end playtest in February, and that’s when Blackburn will “pass the torch.”

“This [playtest] will be especially meaningful to me personally, as it will also serve as a moment to pass the torch of Destiny 2 game director to the next era of leadership as I head on a new adventure outside the walls of Bungie,” wrote Blackburn.

The new Destiny 2 game director will be longtime Bu…

For just $45 BioWare will now sell you a poster of their teaser for a Mass Effect game they haven’t even confirmed the name of yet-

I was already riled up enough when yesterday I wrote about my frustrations with BioWare’s endless cryptic teasing of its upcoming games, so it’s probably a good thing for my blood pressure that it wasn’t until today that I realised the studio is monetising them too

For the pretty steep price of $45 / £37.25 plus shipping, you can get a lithograph (basically a fancy poster) depicting the teaser image revealed this past N7 Day. That is, a character we don’t know anything about yet, wearing a futuristic coat that blends into an image of a location we don’t know anything about yet, from a game we don’t know anything about yet, that doesn’t even have a name yet. And they don’t even throw in a frame!

BioWare is no stranger to merch, of course—the N7 symbol was designed right from the start of the creation of Mass Effect as a logo that would look good on a sweatshirt—and I don’t begrudge any fan for splashing out on something fun from one of th…

Give it up for Ryzen AI Max+- AMD’s Strix Halo uber-APU model list and preliminary specs have leaked out

AMD has apparently gone full-on generic tech word salad for its upcoming Strix Halo uber-APU. We give you the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395, not a new joint venture with Apple but the top chip in a range of unprecedentedly powerful APUs for laptops and hopefully desktops, too.

According to a Weibo post by the ever leaky Golden Pig Upgrade Pack account, we can initially expect three models of AMD’s new high-performance APU. The aforementioned AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 rocks 16 Zen 5 cores and 40 RDNA 3.5 spec GPU compute units.

Next up is the Ryzen AI Max 390 sporting 12 cores and 40 compute units, with the Ryzen AI Max 385 bringing up the rear with eight cores and 32 compute units. For now, there’s no information on clockspeeds and pricing. In fact, these chips are thought to be quite a while from launch and aren’t expected to roll out until 2025.

However, it’s thought that Strix Halo will be something of a departure from previous AMD APUs in taking a chiplet approach as opp…
